I’m a writer, media creator, minister, and consultant with a passion for communication and new technology, and a strong appreciation for the beauty in God’s creation and the power of a good story. I was born in Anchorage, Alaska but now live in Cincinnati.
After graduating from Miami University in Ohio and spending over 10 years in and around the newspaper industry, I left to become a freelance writer, specializing in religion. In 2007, I earned a Master of Divinity degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio and was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination in 2008. I serve part-time as co-pastor at Carthage Christian Church, a 179 year-old urban congregation in Cincinnati.
Since becoming a freelance writer in 2001, I’ve written several hundred articles about church, religion, faith, and spirituality. My most recent project is Banned Questions About the Bible (Chalice Press, April 2011). I’ve written for The Disciple, United Church News, Just Women, StillSpeaking, and was the news and website editor for DisciplesWorld magazine from 2003 through the end of 2009, when the magazine ceased publication.
My seminary studies and journalistic work led me to explore the issue of immigration, including making trips to the U.S./Mexico border. There, I documented the work of faith-based humanitarian groups in preventing migrant deaths and calling for a more humane immigration policy. Beyond Borders: Faith and Action in the Arizona Desert was finished in 2007 and, in cooperation with DisciplesWorld, was distributed for use by church and community groups seeking understand and discuss border issues. The 29-minute video is available for purchase on Amazon.com.
Current projects include consulting and project management for Church Extension and New Church Ministry and serving on the board of Lights on Campus, an ecumenical campus ministry at Miami University. I’m a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Church Press, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, and the Chaplains Association of Ohio.
